Your hosts – Richard and Toki
Even at 7 years old Richard distinctly remembers his dad showing him Saturn through a small telescope. This is the spark that ignited a passion that has been with him ever since. Richard moved to Te Anau in 1999 to work as a guide. From the more iconic attractions to the most remote corners of Fiordland, Richard has extensive guiding experience and is able to assist clients with advice as they explore the area.
Toki moved to Te Anau from Japan in 1998 through a love of the outdoors and back country tramping. With years of tramping and snowboarding behind her, Te Anau, with its relaxed lifestyle seemed the obvious choice to live. They met one summer while Richard was guiding her through the local Glowworm caves! Originally managing a hiking company she now manages the phone, paperwork while keeping an eye on their two young sons and helps out on trips whenever she can.
Astronomy Fiordland – a family affair
Astronomy Fiordland is a small family operated business established in 2007 by husband and wife team Richard and Toki. Richard is a self taught enthusiast who wants to share the extraordinary sights and stories associated with the night sky with visitors to the area.
With the the absence of air and light pollution Richard and Toki are constantly amazed by peoples reaction to a star studded Fiordland night sky. They see the crystal clear night sky as a key part of the Fiordland landscape – and therefore a must on anyones itinerary.
Richard conducted nightly naked eye viewing for five years on overnight vessels in Doubtful and Milford Sounds. The enthusiasm and interest shown by guests on board convinced him to start a more permanent operation closer to home once he became shore based.
Richard has also assisted kindergarten, primary and high schools in the teaching of astronomy by delivering customised presentations.
